Sega Master System

Upright store demo cabinet

The story

Sega's answer to the NES M82 looked like it came straight out of an arcade. The Master System demo cabinet brought Sega's coin op feel to toy and department store aisles in the late 1980s.

Very few survive in working order, and collectors treat a complete one as a holy grail.

Design and hardware

  • An upright cabinet in white with a grid pattern and large SEGA lettering on the sides.
  • A lighted SEGA marquee sits above a CRT set into a black bezel, just like an arcade machine.
  • The control panel holds a Sega Control Stick joystick, with an instruction card under glass beside it.
  • The console and cartridges are locked inside the cabinet.

What it played

Special kiosk demo cartridges and Sega Cards, alongside retail games. Demo carts like a kiosk version of Shooting Gallery turn up on their own today.

Units kept running into the Master System's later years, with games like Castle of Illusion.

Collector notes

  • Ask for any demo cartridges and cards that came with it; they are rare on their own.
  • Check the marquee light and the Control Stick.
  • The white cabinet shows wear easily, so compare the side art closely.
