Atari Home Computers
Computer Demonstration Center for the Atari 400 and 800
The story
Before Atari's consoles got kiosks, its home computers did. The Computer Demonstration Center put the Atari 400 and 800 in front of shoppers in department and catalog stores in the early 1980s, under the slogan "We've brought the computer age home."
It pitched the computers as family machines, with games on one side and home and learning software on the other.
Design and hardware
- A tall black cabinet with a lighted yellow header reading Atari Home Computers and a second lighted band labeled Computer Demonstration Center.
- A TV sits in the upper bay, flanked by lighted panels showing screenshots by category.
- The counter holds the computers and peripherals, with software boxes on a shelf behind them and a glass case below.
- It is full size and very heavy, with internal lighting driven by ballasts.
What it played
Atari 400 and 800 software on cartridge, including games like Super Breakout, plus educational and home titles. Period promo art for the display even shows Pac Man before it came out on these computers.
Collector notes
- Complete units with side art and working lights are the prize. Check every ballast and tube.
- Plan for weight. Moving one takes several people.
- Any original software boxes or signage that came with it add a lot of value.
