Kiosk glossary

The words collectors, restorers and retail people use when they talk about demo kiosks.

Attract mode
The self running demo a game or kiosk plays when nobody is using it, meant to catch a shopper's eye.
Ballast
The electrical part that powers a fluorescent tube. Old ballasts often fail in kiosk headers and are commonly replaced with LED conversions.
Burn in
A permanent ghost image left on a screen that showed the same picture for years, common on kiosk CRTs.
Cam lock
A small cabinet lock with a flat metal cam on the back that turns to hold a panel shut. The most common lock on kiosks.
CAT I
The special kiosk version of the Wii U console, which uses development keys and only reads kiosk discs.
Component video
A three cable analog video connection (red, green, blue plugs) that gives a sharper picture than composite. GameCube, PS2, Xbox and Wii support it.
Composite video
The single yellow video cable used by most consoles through the 90s. The lowest quality common connection.
CRT
Cathode ray tube, the glass picture tube in older TVs and monitors used in most kiosks before the mid 2000s.
CRT geometry
How straight and evenly sized the picture is on a CRT. Often adjustable in a TV's service menu.
Demo disc
A disc with playable demos and trailers from several games, made for store kiosks.
Dummy console
An empty console shell shown on a kiosk while the working console is hidden inside.
End cap
The display space at the end of a store aisle. Some kiosks were built to fit it.
Flyback transformer
The part of a CRT that produces its high voltage. Dangerous to touch.
Header
The lighted sign on top of a kiosk, also called a marquee.
Kiosk mode
Special console software that runs demos, limits play and resets itself for store use.
NFR
Not For Resale. Printed on demo cartridges and discs given to stores.
Planogram
A retailer's diagram of where products and fixtures go in a store.
Play timer
A limit on how long one person can play before the kiosk resets. The NES M82 could be set to 30 seconds, 3, 6 or 128 minutes.
Recapping
Replacing the aging capacitors in a TV or console. On a CRT, a job for a qualified technician.
Retrobright
A hydrogen peroxide and UV light method for removing yellowing from ABS plastic.
RGB
A high quality analog video signal, sent over SCART or special cables, preferred by collectors.
Scaler
A box that converts an old console's video signal to look good on a modern TV, like the RetroTINK or OSSC.
S Video
A two part analog video connection, sharper than composite, supported by the SNES, N64 and later consoles.
Service menu
A hidden settings menu in many TVs for adjusting geometry and color without opening the case.
Tether
A steel cable or armored cord that locks a controller to a kiosk.
