Sega Genesis
Gray floor kiosk with lighted marquee
The story
The Genesis kiosk was on the front line of the 16 bit console war. It stood in toy and department stores through the early 1990s, often right across the aisle from a Super Nintendo tower.
Sonic the Hedgehog made it a destination, and plenty of kids first played Sonic on one of these.
Design and hardware
- A gray floor cabinet with a speaker grille texture and purple accent panels.
- A lighted SEGA marquee overhangs a small CRT set in a gray housing.
- The console sits under a lit clear cover, with two controllers mounted in front.
- A poster frame on the lower cabinet holds swappable game art.
What it played
Retail and demo cartridges, rotated as big releases like Sonic the Hedgehog came out.
Variants to know
Collector notes
- Check the marquee light and the console bay light.
- Original posters in the front frame are a nice bonus.
