Sega Dreamcast
Dreamcast floor kiosk
The story
The Dreamcast kiosk went out ahead of the 9.9.99 launch, and it made a strong first impression. Some Media Play stores had Sonic Adventure playable months early, and Babbage's stores dressed up for the launch.
Players still talk about the moment they saw Sonic Adventure's whale chase on one of these screens.
Design and hardware
- A gray and black floor kiosk with a red bezel around the CRT and the Dreamcast swirl logo down the front.
- The console sits behind a clear window, and two controllers hang on flexible arms.
- Decals on the front often peeled over time, and surviving units frequently show wear there.
What it played
Demo discs like the Dreamcast Generator series, full retail games, and sometimes white label preproduction discs Sega sent to stores.
Variants to know
Collector notes
- Check the front decals. Complete, unpeeled graphics are hard to find.
- Ask about any discs inside. Preproduction discs are a nice bonus.
- Controllers and VMUs are often missing; replacements are easy to find.
