Xbox
Xbox floor kiosk
The story
Microsoft's first console needed to look like an event, and its kiosk did. Electronics Boutique had units playable before the November 2001 launch, and players remember long lines to play the demos.
The deluxe kiosk is one of the loudest, brightest fixtures ever built for a console.
Design and hardware
- The standard kiosk is a black floor unit with a CRT, green accents and tethered controllers.
- The deluxe kiosk adds bright green fluorescent lighting above the marquee and around the console area.
- Two speakers are built into the marquee, and a subwoofer sits between two large poster holders near the bottom.
- It stands on a large metal base shaped like the Xbox X, with translucent fins on the sides that echo the console.
What it played
Demo discs and retail games like Halo: Combat Evolved.
Variants to know
Collector notes
- The deluxe kiosk is heavy and large. The metal base alone takes real effort to move.
- Check that the green tubes and speakers work.
- The original Xbox controller was big; check both tethers.
