Nintendo Switch
North American demo station
The story
The Switch kiosk is the one still in stores today. Nintendo used the same North American demo station at its New York store, at E3 and at GameStop, where it became a fixture.
The stations show trailers and playable demos, and sometimes let people play games before they release.
Design and hardware
- The console sits in a secured holder with Joy Con controllers on tethers.
- Some versions add a Pro Controller or a display tablet for browsing games.
- Nintendo keeps rotating the software, so the same station can feel new for years.
What it played
Demo builds pushed by Nintendo. Recent examples include the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond demo, which let players try the prologue for about 20 minutes at Walmart, GameStop, Best Buy and Target.
Variants to know
Collector notes
- Retired stations mostly come out of GameStop closings and liquidation lots.
- Kiosk consoles run demo firmware and may not work as a normal Switch.
- Collectors are still early here, so tiers may shift as more units surface.
