Nintendo 64

Floor kiosk with lighted saucer console bay

The story

For a lot of players, the N64 kiosk was the first time they saw 3D Mario move. Units went up around the September 1996 launch and stayed in stores until around 2001.

Because Nintendo kept these in service for five years and shipped a lot of them, the N64 kiosk is one of the easier vintage kiosks to find today.

Design and hardware

  • A floor standing tower with a saucer shaped console bay that glows with pink and blue fluorescent light.
  • The header sign uses two small fluorescent bulbs behind the Nintendo 64 graphic.
  • A countertop version was also made for smaller stores.
  • Controllers are tethered to the cabinet, and the cartridge is locked in so it cannot walk off.

What it played

Not For Resale copies of retail games, rotated as new titles came out. Star Fox 64, Diddy Kong Racing, 1080 Snowboarding, Donkey Kong 64 and Pokémon Stadium all ran on these.

Some Target stores ran The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Variants to know

N64 countertop kiosk A smaller unit for counters and end caps.
Pokémon Snap Station A photo printing N64 station at Blockbuster in 1999. Different purpose, but part of the same kiosk family.

Collector notes

  • Test both tubes in the console bay and the header bulbs. Replacement tubes are easy; replacement plastics are not.
  • The NFR cartridges are collectible on their own, so ask whether one is included.
  • Look for the original controller tethers and the lock on the cartridge bay.
  • This is a good first kiosk: parts are findable and the community knows these well.
